BlackBerry Internet Service

The BlackBerry Internet Service, or BIS for short, allows a BlackBerry device to browse the Internet, access personal email accounts and use instant messaging services without pairing itself to a BlackBerry Enterprise Server. Consumers (especially the "professional consumer" or "prosumer") can therefore get the same consistent browsing and email experiences available on enterprise-enabled devices.

Note that BIS is a hosted service provided by Research In Motion on behalf of the carriers. Browsing is done through a hosted Mobile Data System managed by RIM. Most carriers support or are upgrading their systems to support BIS.
