Mobile Data SystemThe BlackBerry Mobile Data System, or MDS for short, is the latest generation of what was once referred to as the Mobile Data Service. In its earlier incarnation, MDS acted as an Internet gateway and HTTP proxy server for BlackBerry devices; without it, devices could not browse the Internet unless the carrier supported direct HTTP connectivity or else provided browser access through a WAP gateway. MDS used to work as an add-on to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. MDS is more than just Internet connectivity at this point. With MDS you can build and deploy rich, on-device applications built using a visual development tool called MDS Studio. MDS is also more scalable and includes tools for application provisioning and management.
